Make Bus Stops Safer With Targeted CCTV | E-Petition

Currently there is an e-petition before the NSW Parliament which is set to support the safety of public transport users in the state.

As the petition acknowledges, amongst the users of public transport are vulnerable members of our community: people with disabilities; older people; women; and children.

The petition as it outlines supports an evidence-based approach for the selective installation of CCTV at bus stops that have an identified risk based on data such as reported incidents, and stops that service late night routes, amongst other variables.

CCTV isn't a panacea for public safety, however it does have a demonstrated efficacy not only as a preventative measure but also for assisting law enforcement after an incident has occurred. A 2019 publication from the Australian Institute of Criminology reported that cases where footage was obtained is correlated to an 18% increase in the clearance rate of cases.

As such we're calling on everyone to consider signing this petition and sharing it as well.
